THE GREAT JOB BEING DONE BY PATH:
"We contacted eight hotels and 41
restaurants in Hanoi to ask them whether they are interested in implementing
smoke-free rooms. 14 restaurants and two hotels agreed and established a
smoke-free room. Interestingly, the Horison hotel already had wide-ranging
smoke-free policies. 10 restaurants did not agree to set up a smoke-free
room, either because of they thought it would negatively affect their
business, or because they didn't have a suitable separate room. We are
continuing to follow up with 17 other restaurants and six hotels.
...we provided the following to
restaurants that agreed to have smoke-free policies: 1) an attractive "No
Smoking" sign made by wood in English and Vietnamese; 2) "No Smoking"
stickers with a smoke-free restaurants logo; and 3) guidelines for
maintaining a smoke-free restaurant. Lastly we are highlighting this work in
the mass media, through advertisements in newspapers (Lao Dong, Vietnam
News), magazines (The Guide, Vietnam Discovery;), and electronic billboards
(in Lang Ha street and Trang Tien Plaza). We also frequently update and
distribute the list of smoke-free restaurants to NGOs and embassies in
Hanoi.
We conducted one training for staff at KOTO restaurant about tobacco control
and set up a meeting among smoke-free restaurants in Hanoi (together with
PATH Canada and WHO) to share information and discuss the implementation of
the smoke-free restaurant initiative. All of restaurant participated in this
meeting they agreed that smoke free not affect to their business, and also
custemors are very happy when they have area for people who not smoking. We
are going to interview14 restaurants and two hotels to determine the
reaction of their staff and customers, positive/negative economic impacts
after their implementation of smoke-free room, and printing SFR postcards.
