Sept. 2005: -- Vermont has now banned smoking in bars as well as restaurants and other public entertainment and transport.
If the reality lags behind the law, please let SFW know about the venues which lead by example.

BELLOWS FALLS

Bellows Falls Diner
90 Rockingham Street     (802) 463-9800
(off US Route 5)
A restored 1940s diner. General note about diners to tourists visiting the US: A diner is not just a restaurant but a uniquely American food experience. Not luxurious. No movie stars, no great views. If you know the names of the waiters, it's because you live in the neighborhood, not because they introduce themselves to you. They don't memorize a list of the specials - it's always the same, and generally pretty good. The best ones serve a typical American "breakfast" all day - eggs, toast, maybe sausages, and coffee from plastic pots - if you're lucky, the pot is fresh. If you're not, the residues are fascinating.
Open daily 9am-7pm

BRATTLEBORO

Ray's Diner
45 Canal Street     (802) 254-0090
Sun 7am-2pm / Mon-Th 6am-2pm / Th-Sat open 8pm for dinner

BURLINGTON

Bars in Burlington go smokefree (in principle) starting May 2004. Vermont banned smoking in restaurants in the early 90s, but not in bars.

DUMMERSTON

Rainbow Cattle Company
Route 5 off I-91   (802) 254-3462
Gay/lesbian bar and dance club. Separate nonsmoking dance *room*, the rest of the place allows smoking.

New England Innkeepers Association

The New England Innkeepers Association maintains a list of inns which includes a number of smokefree establishments.
