An Irregular Compendium of News from SmokeFreeWorld

December 2000
Thanks to Via Magazine, the bimonthly magazine of the California State Automobile Association, for a write-up in the January/February 2001 print edition, reaching 3 million households in the Western US.
Thanks to Destinations, for mentioning SmokeFreeWorld. The Destinations web site provides travel resources for Southwest Virginia and beyond.

November 2000
SmokeFreeWorld got a mention in Gault Millau, the prestigious French gastronomic review. (Pat selves on back and get back to work.) We also had the chance to taste-test the latest French addition to the web site, Au Tibourg. Well, someone has to go to these places.

and in between...?
No we weren't slacking off, quite the opposite! The listings grew at a good pace, thanks to staff work, great reports from the field and, increasingly, contacts from business owners who want your business.

August 2000
SmokeFreeWorld staff attended the 13th World Conference on Tobacco or Health to learn about laws on tobacco use worldwide. 4500 people came from over 100 countries, including some we had ignorantly thought too occupied with day-to-day survival to think about tobacco control. In fact, while certain branches of governments may profit from tobacco (not just from taxes but through actual manufacture) other branches of the same governments see its health costs as a drain on their economies and societies that they can't afford to ignore. So we learned something. It was a fascinating look at how different cultures tackle (and are tackled by) the tobacco industry. The next conference (summer 2003) will be held in Helsinki.

May 2000
We welcome the first listings from India and Italy.

March 2000
Health Magazine gave SmokeFreeWorld a lovely mention this month, encouraging travelers to patronize smokefree establishments.

Top 25 Women on the Web Awards
SmokeFreeWorld co-sponsored this annual event, in San Francisco, honoring women who have made significant contributions to technology or advanced the participation of women in technology. Awardees at the (once again) sold-out event included Ellen Hancock, CEO of Exodus Communications; Heidi Van Arnem, founder of ICanOnline.Net, an internet community for people with disabilities; and Gail Williams, executive director of The Well. Maybe you know someone who should be nominated for next year!
