Bamboo Garden Vegetarian Cuisine
364 Roy Street (206) 282-6616
Kosher, vegan, smoke-free inside and out.
This is my favorite restaurant.
One reason for the Bamboo Garden's
great taste is that all the foods are prepared fresh daily. Only the
sparingly used baby corn and water-chestnuts come from cans.
The sauces are delicious. Of those that are spicy, you can request
any level, from "no spice"-to-"hot." And the variety of dishes is
stunning -- about 100 choices.
The Bamboo Garden specializes in vegan Chinese food whose origins go
back thousands of years to China's early royal court imperial
dynasties. While the items are called "meat" or "fish" on the menu,
they are all vegetables.
Before making his annual prayer for national prosperity, the emperor
was required to practice strict vegetarianism for seven weeks. The
court's chefs created recipes that had the appearance, texture, and
taste of the emperor's favorite meats and seafoods. The surrogate
foods are usually made from wheat gluten or soy derivatives.
Many dishes are made in the wok -- all use 100% vegetable oil. While
all the dishes have no cholesterol, some are deep fried. The menu
contains a small "heart" image next to those dishes that contain a
minimum of saturated fat. You can request no oil, salt, sugar, etc.
with many of the dishes.
The only non-vegan items are the fortune cookies, which contain eggs.
Very reasonable prices. Kosher. One block from the Seattle Center, free parking lot.
thanks Demian!

Thanks Killebrew!
Kell's Irish Restaurant and Pub
1916 Post Alley (206) 728-1916
I had a hard time deciding whether to submit this one or not.
It's a nice bar with atmosphere in a little nouveau-olde alley, not squeaky clean modern and not run-down either, just nice, warm, lots of wood, and lots of beers. You walk in through a non-smoking bar to get to a smoking bar. The separation is an (open) door. I was in the non-smoking side and if anyone was smoking on the other side, it wasn't bothering me. They have live music, but it's on the smoking side, sigh.
King Ludwig's Tyrol Restaurant
8501 Fifth Avenue NE (206) 524-3100
German and Hungarian cooking.
Kingfish Cafe
602 19th Ave East (206) 320-8757
It is hard to find Southern food this good outside of the south. the prices are moderate (10-20 dollars per entree) but I have never left hungry. All of the staff is friendly and service is fantastic. their hours are limited and they are often busy, the sign of a good place. Completely worth the trip and the wait, if any... and I normally will not wait at a place.
thanks Alan Killebrew!
La Spiga Restaurant
1401 Broadway (206) 323-8881
Northern Italian cuisine.
Limelight Cafe
3656 34th Avenue West (206) 282-1282
Definitely not in the Seattle mainstream, the Limelight is tucked away
in
the western section of a remote neighborhood called "Magnolia" and is
well
worth seeking out. It is an upscale but moderately priced restaurant.
It
features continental cuisine with Italian influences leaning to the
north.
The Lamb Osso Buco was tender and flavorful and served in a red wine
sauce
with veggies and ricotta gnocchi. The Lasagna Bolognese was definitely
northern, layered with goodies like sausage, beef, and chicken and
liberally
covered with reggiano cheese. It arrived tableside a bit too hot for
comfort, probably overstayed the oven. Worth the cool-down wait.
What makes this place unusual is that it is one of the few in town (the
country?) offering half portions. Definitely the way to go. Alas, the
price, however is not half, but about 3 to 4 bucks less. The whole
check
including salad, tax and tip (but not wine this time) was about $40.
Other dinner entrees include Pepper Steak Saltimbocca Chicken, and an
interesting sounding Spinach & Hazelnut Cannelloni.
Reservations usually not needed, but go early.
Another gem from the investigative team of
Floyd
& Donna.

Mon-Sat 11am-1am / Sun noon-midnight
Nectar
412 N 36th Street (Ballard) 206-632-2020
Excellent food. Cool upper deck area, but best to grab your drinks before you head up. It gets busy and crowded, making it tough for waitresses to keep your glass from getting empty.
Live music, and the web site is worth a visit just to see the cute web menus.
Old Town Ale House

Roy's
The Westin Hotel 1900 Fifth Avenue (206) 256-7697
Roy's is a special treat, definitely upscale and pricey.
The winelist is likewise comprehensive and pricey (good Pinot: $38),
however, no sommelier comes out and tastes it for you.
Their origin is in Hawaii where they have three.
Others are in Tokyo, Guam, Pebble Beach, Scottsdale, Florida, New
York, and now Seattle.
They are shortly opening in San Francisco. The locations themselves
provide a
little insight into their appeal. As to the food, it is top notch and
excellent.
For starters, some of us had blackened ahi (yellow fin tuna), rare and
melt-in-your-mouth tender. For entree, I had an esoteric pacific
island
fish done just right at medium rare. Delicious and exquisitely
presented.
(They seem to give great effort at presentation) Accompanying veggies
were
likewise presented well, but just adequate.
My bok choy was stringy and tough (unforgiveable for an upscale
restaurant).
The desserts as you might expect from an Asian orientation such as
this were just ok.
Definitely not noted for deserts. The overall experience: Excellent
to near perfect.
Thanks Floyd!
Union Bay Cafe

outdoor tables are (in principle) smoke free.
Free parking (very limited), some street parking (not too bad).
Every Tuesday they feature a Scandinavian smorgasbord which
was excellent and good value. Wine and beer (all bottled) are
likewise good values.
Thanks Floyd!
