Canada is a leading nation in protecting nonsmokers.
Provinces and territories which ban smoking in the workplace, including restaurants and bars: BC, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, Ontario, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan. Quebec adopted a similar law which goes into effect May 31, 2006. Ontario casinos go to smokefree by end of June, including First Nations casinos.
Submissions are still welcome; change does not happen overnight. Venues which lead by example deserve our business.
August 2001: Ottawa, Ontario banned smoking in workplaces and public places (including bars, bowling alleys & other fun places).
June 2001: Toronto banned smoking in restaurants and bowling alleys. Bars, bingo & billiard halls, casinos and racetracks get three years to phase in a ban.

Smoking ban passed on May 1, 2003.
Update May 2004, thanks to Dave McWilliam of the KFL&A Health Unit:
A year has now gone by and we're at probably 99% compliance. Generally, the process/transition went smoothly. Clearly all those places in Ontario and elsewhere who went smoke-free before us made our process that much easier. Over the past ten years in Ontario there has been a concerted effort to create smoke-free municipalities at the same time as restricting access to tobacco by underage youth as well as providing some level of cessation support to the community. Comprehensive tobacco strategies are a necessity to hope to achieve a healthier community. OCAT (Ontario Campaign for Action on Tobacco) deserves special recognition for their expertise and support in achieving smoke-free places in Ontario (http://www.ocat.org/) Also the OTN (Ontario Tobacco-Free Network) - www.theotn.org
[Virtually all public places and workplaces must be totally smoke-free. The only exemptions are:
1. Bingo Halls: they can provide a 50% Designated Smoking Room only if it is separate and ventilated, and employees do not service the room, and
2: Long-term Care Facilities/ Resthomes: can provide a DSR that is separate and ventilated.]

The casino is three levels, and the second level is a non-smoking floor.
I have visited many other casinos in the US, and while they have smoke-free
tables
or perhaps areas, I don't know any that have an entire floor as non-smoking.
Incidentally, it was just as busy!"

TORONTO
A comment from Cher: "... Toronto, where the smoking ban has been effective for years, ... is really fantastic. We have the smallest percentage of smokers per capita in the developed world (about 15% only) and smoking is forbidden EVERYWHERE!! Including bars, pubs and even outdoor patios-- and no businesses can complain, if the ban is uniform, obviously no one is taking their business elsewhere, and since non smokers are the vast majority, MORE people are estimated to be going out than before. If you smoke in Toronto, it is considered EXTREMELY anti-social ... the government supports the ban, as it has saved millions in health care costs."

Stork on the Roof

A small (approx. 15 tables), friendly spot that's popular with locals and also enjoyed rave reviews from local media. The two chef/owners are Canadian and Dutch, and benefit from their experience preparing meals aboard a private, Indian-owned, yacht that sailed the seas of southern and southeast Asia. Creative ("fusion") combinations of spices and ingredients make for great halibut, rissotto, lamb and more. Entirely non-smoking.
thanks Peter Lebensold!

WATERLOO
A January 1, 2000, bylaw banned smoking in all indoor public areas including bars and restaurants. A resident reports: "...most bars disregard the by-law on a regular basis, however smoking has decreased there. However, it has been my experience that every restaurant I've been to in Kitchener-Waterloo and Cambridge (in Ontario, Canada) is completely smoke-free. "
Thanks Greg Uebele!
