MONTGOMERY COUNTY
Currently, smoking is only allowed at the bar; so if a restaurant has no bar,
there is supposed to be no smoking. This appears to be widely enforced.
In March 1999 the County Council banned smoking completely in all bars and restaurants by 2002.
Meanwhile, restaurants *with* bars may or may not permit smoking.
Places listed here were added before this was known, or else have bars but are still smokefree.
Update: In June 2000, a judge ruled that the County Council
overstepped its authority when it passed the ban.
An appeal is expected. The suit was brought by a group of Montgomery County restaurant owners
and by the city of Gaithersburg.
Half of the 1400 restaurants in the County ban smoking; more than can be listed here,
but they deserve your support! If you're dining and smoke starts wafting towards you,
a friendlier place is probably right next door.

Vegetable Garden
11618 Rockville Pike (301) 468-9301
A reviewer says:
I like it a lot. They have a menu with photographs of
the food, so you can order from the pictures. It's the kind of vegetarian restaurant where a lot of dishes are "faux" - fake chicken, fake meat, that kind of thing, based on soy products and some kind of wheat product, I forget the name, that can be made to mimic animal
protein. I suppose I like the restaurant because the dish I always order tastes like curry and has lots of cut up potatoes. Service is good, and it has a cozy feeling.

SILVER SPRING
The Continental Kettle
2259 Bel Pre Road (301) 598-1736
has decided (effective November 1999) to discontinue its practice of allowing
customers to smoke at the bar. There will still be a service bar, but no
smoking will be allowed anywhere in the restaurant. This is in response to
customer complaints about smoke in the air.
Their food is good and their customers are serious eaters, so everyone's
comfort level should improve.
They make everything from Veal Florentine to Beef Burgundy to shish
kebob - it's a continental menu - and people who have eaten there describe
the food as excellent.
Tijuana's Mexican Cafe
8221 Georgia Avenue (301) 562-9336
Pleasant, reasonably priced Mexican restaurant and bar.
They will stick smokers in a room in back if requested,
but looked doubtful when the topic came up. :-)
Tijuana's is across the street from
Champion Billiards
8216 Georgia Avenue (301) 587-4736
Two large rooms, smoking and nonsmoking,
separated by nothing more than a popcorn machine in a small
intermediate section, & you must walk
through the smoking room to get to the nonsmoking room. Yet there is
a front door from which the nonsmoking room could be reached.
Maybe if enough people crowd into the smokefree section, it would send a message...
10:30 am - 2 am Monday - Thursday
Friday 1am - 4 am Sat/Sun 10am - 4am
(some people are serious about their billiards).
