Tube stops, where known, are in parentheses.

ASK (Victoria Street)
160/162 Victoria Street (SW1E), tel 011-020-7630-8228
quite near the Victoria Theatre and Victoria Station
Part of a larger chain that serves very good and inexpensive Mediterranean food - salads, pasta, pizza. At this particular site the entire large second floor is completely smoke free. There is smoking downstairs at the bar. A terrific choice for anyone attending the Victoria Theatre.

Aster House
3 Sumner Place (South Kensington, SW7 3EE)
phone: +44 20 7581 5888     fax: +44 20 7584 4925
Voted Best & Breakfast in London - London Tourism Awards 2001 organised by the London Tourist Board. Awarded highest Rating for a B&B by the English Tourism Council in January 2001. "Entirely smokefree" says the owner.

Babe Ruth
172-6 The Highway E1    020 7481 8181
American restaurant.

Bean 'n' Cup Cafe
104 Camden High Street (NW1)     tel 020 7267 7340
The Bean n Cup is a real find, as it is a 100% smoke free cafe in an area in which most cafes leave asthmatics like me gasping for air! The smaller seating area at the entrance to the cafe is characterless and rather formal and is usually frequented by older Camden locals. Those unfamiliar with the area may walk past without realising that the cafe includes a very pleasant and much larger area to the rear of the cafe that houses comfortable squashy sofas and is frequented by a younger, trendier clientelle as well as local artists / authors / intelligensia (not unusual to overhear heated debates about psychoanalysis / philosophy etc!). The cafe serves excellent coffee, a range of soft drinks, herbal teas, sandwiches and cakes at reasonable prices. The cafe is clean and bright and service is very friendly. The comfy, relaxed rear section is a nice place to meet friends and attractive women visiting alone can enjoy a coffee and read a newspaper without harrassment (not always the case in Camden cafes!).
thanks Louisa!

Beehive Pub
407 Brixton Road (Stockwell) SW9    020 7783 3643
Has a big non-smoking *section*. Part of the Wetherspoon chain of pubs.

Bertorelli's Restaurants
44A Floral Street WC2    020 7836 3969
Several floors: a cafe and several restaurants, serving increasingly elaborate Italian dishes. There is also a bar on the cafe level - smokefree status unknown.

The Blackfriar Pub
174 Queen Victoria Street (EC4)
This lovely pub has loads of character, although space is a little limited inside. It has recently changed to become non-smoking throughout (inside). On warmer days or evenings, particularly during the week patrons often stand around outside for a drink, so you may encounter some smokers should you choose to drink out in the fresh(?) air. Closed Saturday evenings and Sundays. Nearest tube is Blackfriars. -- Thanks Geoff Drake!
A recent visitor says: throngs of smokers congregate immediately outside ... smoke from smokers right outside the doors comes right into the pub... And forget about sitting or standing outdoors to enjoy your drink... -- Thanks C. Austin (This one might be pulled)

Bombay Brasserie
Courtfield Road SW7    020 7370 4040
Indian cuisine. No-smoking *areas*. Pianist. Expensive.

The Boom Bar (South African) Restaurant
18, Crouch End Hill (N8) Tel: 020 8340 4539
Has won an award for being the first in the Borough of Haringey to be smokefree.
Thanks to Action on Smoking and Health

The Bull's Head Pub
15 Strand on the Green, Chiswick, W4 (Chiswick main line and Kew Bridge)    tel 020 8994 1204
This is one of my favourite pubs, located in a terrific spot right on the Thames. Take a lovely stroll down the Thames path from Kew Bridge past the flood prone houses along the path and then stop off at this little gem of a pub for a drink and some very nice food. The menu is far from your standard pub food and changes regularly and is prepared very well. Prices are reasonable between £8 - £15 for a main. Inside it is very quaint, with low ceilings and cosy alcoves. The non-smoking area is relatively small (unfortunately) but is well separated from the rest of the pub. This pub is very busy on weekends, especially during the warmer months. There is the option of sitting outside to have a drink, also.
Thanks to Geoff Drake!

British Museum- Court Cafe & Restaurant
Great Russell Street (WC1B)

Cafe Latte
42 Penton Street (N1)   0207 6890805
The coffee shop that I regularly visit has just changed to be 100% no smoking! I thought you would like to know and I hope to help that little cafe in their effort!

Viennese-style cafe, salads, sandwiches and lots of pastries. Drinks available.
Daily 9am-10pm

Cambridge Hotel
Shaftesbury Avenue (Leicester Square tube)
Bar downstairs (smoking), small smokefree restaurant with bar upstairs. Excellent food. Not a big range of beers upstairs, but the ale was OK. Really it tasted like a plain old lager. Right across from the Palace Theatre. I highly recommend this for a good meal before the show.

Chowki
2-3 Denman Street     tel 020 7439 1330
Smokefree sections. Inexpensive and tasty Indian 'regional feasts' - menu changes monthly. The first (main) room of the restaurant is completely smoke free, and is separated well from the next room where smoking is allowed. You might have to ask to be seated in the non-smoking area.

Restaurant/cafe. Owner of the Camden Heartbeat Award for high standards of food hygiene, a healthy food choice, and a 100% smoke-free environment.

The Clachan
34, Kingly Street (W1B)
Smokefree sections. A very nice pub with a genuine atmosphere. Very bustling on the Friday nights, nicely chilled out in the afternoon. Good selection of real ales and regular throughfare of guest beers too. Georgous gastro pub food too (€5-7 price guide), but can be tough getting a table at peak times. Non smoking upstairs, with a separate mini bar. Although sometimes it can be booked out for private functions, leaving only the smokey downstairs. Otherwise very pleasant and enjoyable night out.

Clarke's Restaurant
124 Kensington Church Street (W8)    tel 020 7221 9225
Completely non-smoking California-inspired English restaurant. There's one set menu each evening (that changes every day) so check ahead when you're booking. Items were well done, but a bit too English and not enough California, at least on the evening we went.

Coronet Pub
338 Holloway Road (Holloway) N7    tel 020 7609 5014
Big pub, big non-smoking section (another Wetherspoon pub). Flashy neon sign (it used to be a movie theatre).

The Duke
7 Roger Street, London (WC1N)     tel 020 7242 7230
A lovely little pub tucked away just down the road from the Charles Dickens Museum in Doughty Street. It is art deco themed throughout and has a smoking section as you first enter the bar and a separate non-smoking section past that. The food is particularly good. The menu has a sort of gastro-pub feel to it but is probably a bit more adventurous and better than most venues offering this type of food.
Thanks to Geoff Drake!

Ember

London's first non-smoking multi-level venue. Ahead of legislative requirements set for July 2007, the retro Farringdon venue with a restaurant, an underground club area and lounge room (all non-smoking) has an outdoor studio studio for smokers. A glass paneled outdoor Studio with seating at tables allows views that span right across the cocktail bar, from the inside and out.
Fresh and healthy menus for Brunch, Lunch and Evening meals including individual menus for Smoothies and Bloody Mary's. 'Cocktail Appreciation Society' where punters will critique various new alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails.
"...very funky and has some brilliant food all sourced from local suppliers. From Tapas to Retro British classics such as mini Toad-In-The-Hole to mini Knickerbocker glories and a Bloody Mary menu, it is perfect for lunches and brunches even evening munches! Ha! that rhymes! Huurahhh!"

Food for Thought
31 Neal Street (Covent Garden) WC2    0171-836 0239
Small vegetarian restaurant, decent prices. BYO drinks.

Fratelli
In the mall up the street from Sloane Square tube
Sandwiches and coffee. Can't recommend it for evening pre-theatre meals (Royal Court Theatre is right by the tube), because Fratelli closes at 6:30. The Royal Court has its own restaurant - quite nice until the smokers light up. Couches, bar, and the food announces its readiness by triggering flashing lights and buzzers in what seems like a tazer that you are handed after you pay. Seriously. If you drink enough you can ignore the smoke, or banish it to the edge of your consciousness, until you get home and have to wash it out of your hair. There's also a bookshop with scripts from the productions. Yeah but that's the theatre, so, er, Fratelli is just this little, clean, smokefree cafe ok?

Gate House Pub
1 North Hill (Highgate) N6    020 8340 8054
Big non-smoking *section* (another Wetherspoon pub).

Glas

Given the Camden Heartbeat Award.

Hara The Circle Bar
Queen Elizabeth St (Butler's Wharf) SE1   tel 020 7403 8886
Modern Indian restaurant with completely non-smoking restaurant. Bar also has non-smoking area but doesn't seem to be completely separate from outdoor smoking area. Food was much better than your average curry place and not greasy at all. Restaurants of this style are more likely found in Soho than South London.

The Healthier Eating cafe
24 Camden Street (NW1 9DP) tel 07276 2649
Given the Camden Heartbeat Award.

Heartstone Cafe
106 Parkway, Camden (NW1)   tel 020 7485 7744
Cafe, health shop & massage / health centre. Heartstone is really more of a small restaurant, serving mostly organic, seasonal wholefood, ranging from soups, sandwiches and salads, through to grander fare such as chicken fajita and grilled sea bass. 100% smoke free, the food is tasty, wholesome and reasonably priced. Heartstone serves wines, freshly made juices and smoothies, a range of great coffees and unlimited purified water for £1 per customer. For those unconcerned about calories there are a range of home made cakes available. Seats approx 32 in a clean, pleasant, vaguely new agey minimalist setting. The reassuringly clean kitchen is in full view of the dining area. When I visited there was a mix of locals and tourists visiting, many of whom were struggling to eat the incredibly tall club sandwiches.
Tu-Sat 9am-9pm / Sun 10am-4pm / closed Mondays
thanks Louisa!

Imli
167-168 Wardour Street (W1)     tel 020 7287 4243
Indian tapas restaurant by the team behind Tamarind. Atmosphere is modern minimalist, not warm cozy but food is good (definitely better than your average curry place), and not too pricey. Completely non-smoking.

Itsu
118 Draycott Avenue, Chelsea (SW3)     tel 020 7584 5522
It was so nice to find a venue that allowed us to enjoy our meal without breathing smoke all night. It is very difficult to find an entirely smoke-free restaurant in London. The bar was located upstairs and was the only smoking area. The downstairs was the restaurant which was set up with moving conveyors with various types of sushi and sashimi and food for you to choose at your leisure and was entirely smoke free.

Jiva Juice Ltd
45-46 Middle Yard, Camden Lock Place (NW1)   tel 020 7485 9977
Smokefree juice bar, won the Camden Heartbeat Award, for high standards of food hygiene, a healthy food choice, and a 100% smoke-free environment.

Kantan Limited Cafe
101 Clerkenwell Road (EC1R 5BX) tel 7242 1000
Winner of the Camden Heartbeat Award.

BrewHouse at Kenwood
Kenwood, Hampstead Heath,    tel 020 83415384
A very pleasant cafe at Kenwood House, with a beautiful outdoor area. Non-smoking inside. Coffee, sandwiches and so on. Catered by Company of Cooks. This is a really nice way to wind up a ramble across Hampstead Heath or a visit to Kenwood House. The day we stopped in, it was crowded with families. The atmosphere is cheerful and bright.

Kulu Kulu
76 Brewer St (W1, Piccadilly Circus)   tel 020 7734 7316
Tiny sushi bar with revolving conveyor belt, completely non-smoking, seats probably 35 people. Expect to pay about £12-15. This is the best sub-£20 sushi I've had in London.

16th century manor house housing an arts centre, concerts, children's shows, and cafe open daily (except Monday). Restaurant/cafe. Winner of the Camden Heartbeat Award. Walkable from Archway and Highgate stations.

Lebanese Lounge
50.5 - 52.5 Hanbury Street (E1, Liverpool Street, Aldgate East)     tel 020 7539 9200
Large, upscale Lebanese restaurant. Tradition Lebanese cuisine, Arabian hospitality - delicious mezza, grilled meat and fish and traditional salads. Healthy dishes, relying more on olive oil than animal fat or butter. Chef Sharu Hussain has 15 years of international restaurant experience. No liquor license but also no corkage charges. Delivery and outside catering. [The restaurant's Shisha Lounge, which allows smoking, is separate.]
Monday - Sunday 11.30 - 23.00

Lemongrass
243 Royal College Street (Camden Town NW1) 020 7284 1116
Three blocks from Camden Town Tube Station
Lemongrass is my favourite restaurant in London. It is a completely non-smoking restaurant, that serves a fusion of Thai and Combodian flavours. The chef believes in providing a clean palette for tasting food, hence the non-smoking policy. Quite good, reasonable prices. Try the Lok Luk Beef! Mon-Sat 7pm-10:30pm
thanks Boston Viking for details!

Loch Fyne Restaurants
676 Fulham Road (SW6) (0)20 7610 8020
Crouch End, 2 Park Street (N8) (0)20 8342 7740
Fisherman’s Hut, 175 Hampton Road (Twickenham) (0)20 8255 6222
Highly rated chain of fresh seafood restaurants (lunch and dinner, every day). Outlets in London and throughout the UK. All nonsmoking.

Manna
4 Erskine Road (NW3)
Vegetarian and vegan dining, eclectic menu.
Weekday dinners, weekend brunch.

Marine Ices
8 Haverstock Hill, NW3 (Chalk Farm Tube Station) tel 0207.482.9003
The entire restaurant is now 100% smoke free [says Louisa]. A family oriented Italian Restaurant, that's quite good but is generally known for its fantastic Ice Cream. The Pasta dishes are good, the garlic bread unusual but a treat.
thanks Boston Viking!
Nov. 2005: We had pizza and salad, very nice, nice service, bright and clean. Not sure if the smokefree policy is because of the gelato counter, anyway it was a nice meal, it would do for a business lunch too.

Mango Room
10 Kentish Town Road (NW1)     020 7482 5065
The Mango Room is a popular restaurant serving Caribbean cuisine. Entrance to the restaurant is via the smoking section, however the non smoking area is large and completely separate to the smoking area with no pollution from drifting smoke. The food is generally excellent and main courses range from £9 - £12.50. I wouldn't recommend the ackee and salt fish (very salty with hardly any ackee), but would highly recommend the grilled goat cheese salad, grilled baraccuda, jerk chicken and the delicious curry goat. The restaurant attracts a mixed cosmopolitan clientelle, the majority of customers being Caribbean British. Service is friendly without being intrusive. The Mango Room is a very popular restaurant and you will need to book in advance if you want a table in the non smoking section, even during the week. The ambience is warm and friendly, large Carribean murals adorn the walls and the music, which is quiet and unobtrusive, is classice reggae, soul and R&B.!
The restaurant is a 1 minute walk from Camden Town Underground Station. IMO this is THE smoke free restaurant to visit in Camden, the food is far better than the other smoke free restaurants in the area and smoke free really does mean smoke free. Enjoy!
Thanks Louisa!

Masala Zone
9 Marshall Street (near Carnaby Street, closest tube: Oxford Circus)     tel 0207 287 8555
80 Upper Street, Islington     tel 020 7359 3399
Indian Restaurants are the most difficult to find, for smoke-free dining in London (this is one of two that I've found). Masala Zone has a modern interpretation of Indian Food, served in a modern interior, that's is completely smoke-free! Reasonably prices, and beautifully presented.
thanks Boston Viking!
Dec. 2005 - I just wanted to confirm that Masala Zone, already listed on your web site, is a SUPERB choice for quality Indian food in London, in a smoke-free environment. According to their publicity, they also have restaurants in Islington and Earls Court.
thanks to another satisfied customer

Milan Cafe
158 Upper Tooting Road (SW17)     020 8767 4347
Vegetarian Indian cuisine despite the name, modest prices.

Nando's
187-189 Chiswick High Road (W4)     020 8995 7533
Smokefree sections. Another burger chain...but a little bit more upmarket than Mickey D's or Kentucky Fried Chicken (yeah, that's what we used to call it kids). Dedicated non-smoking sections with the smoking section well separated so as not to cause a problem. Not only that but the non-smoking section is in the better part of the restaurant (as it should be). They do chicken quite well here. Well they would wouldn't they - it's all they do. The best thing about Nando's is the choice of extra hot sauce on your burger or anything else for that matter, which is a must for me. There's even bottles of the stuff on the side so you can really douse your food in the stuff, which I do! The chain is expanding and there are stores around the UK. Out West, in London, you have the choice between Earl's Court, Chiswick or Ealing Common.
Cheers, Geoff

Pizza Express
252 Chiswick High Road (W4) and locations across London and the UK
tel: 020 8747 0193
Smokefree sections. I don't know if all the locations in this well known chain have non-smoking sections but certainly the few I have been to have had them. Not only that, but the non-smoking sections have been at the front of the restaurant with a very well separated smoking section at the back. The pizzas here are quite good and the menus have some diversity but it is a chain, of course, so the menu doesn't change much over time. I'm just thankful there are so many about as they provide a useful escape from the smoke fouled eating experience that is London. For me, the garlic dough balls are a must as a starter and it is always hard to pull myself away from these temptations and move on to the heartier main menu. These guys are kid friendly as well and will supply high chairs, if required. Prices are quite reasonable.
Thanks Geoff!

The Pommeler's Rest
196-198 Tower Bridge Road (SE12UN)     020 7378 1399
2 short blocks away from Tower Bridge. Pub with a nonsmoking area. Good basic pub grub, reasonably priced. One smoker infilitrated the edge of the non-smoking area and promptly lit up, management did not react. Still, it's a rare pub in Britain that even *has* such a section! [A Wetherspoon pub]

Pret-a-Manger
A California-style sandwich shop, specializing in sandwiches made with exotic breads, fresh sqeezed juices, "fabulous espressos". They have branches throughout London, all smoke-free, but not all are big enough to have seating indoors.

Upmarket bar and restaurant (named after William Hogarth's pet dog) down the quieter end of Chiswick High Road (past Turnham Green - nearest Tube). The restaurant area is non-smoking and completely separated from the smoking area in the bar. Bookings are recommended. The owner was formerly Elton John's chef and the restaurant is making a splash. To sum it up - quality contemporary food, in contemporary surroundings at local prices.
Thanks to Geoff

The Punjab Restaurant
80 Neal Street, Covent Garden (1/2 way between Covent Garden and Tottenham Court Road Tube Stations) tel 0207 836 9787
Smoke free Indian Dining is difficult. The Punjab offers a large smoke free room in the rear, completely separated from the smoking section. Basic but good quality Traditional Indian (British-flaired) cuisine. Open for Lunch and Dinner. During Lunch, insist on the non-smoking room, and they will accomodate you. No problem at Dinner.
thanks Boston Viking!
Update Sept. 2002:
This customer was not happy. Apparently things have gone downhill since Boston Viking was here! We were just going to strike the restaurant off the list, and eventually we may, but the review was so eloquent we thought it should be posted:
... While there was a smoke free room, the staff seemed extremely annoyed that we insited on eating there. Perhaps this was because the smoking section was busy and the non smoking section was empty. The flavour and quality of the food was very poor and the size of the portions was ridiculously small. The service was terrible. The staff made no attempt to hide the fact that they were displeased with us. One of the dishes we ordered, chicken tikka special, sounded great on the menu and was described as a wonderous dish that came doused with a liberal quantity of brandy, which would be set aflame before our eyes at our table. In fact the waiter flung a tiny and uninspired dish of chicken pieces onto our table and muttered "did you ask for regular or special?" When we replied that we had ordered special the waiter produced a small glass of brandy, threw half of it over the chicken, set fire! to it, shrugged and walked away. No sense of occasion, no "enjoy your meal" no, "is everything all right?" Just contemptuous, rude service. £48.50 for 2 main courses (the size of starters) with rice, 2 ice creams and 2 beers. Service so terrible to be almost comical. Why bother having a non smoking section of you resent the fact that your customers might want to make us of it? As we left I looked into the smoking section and people seemed pretty happy. I could not be certain, but wondered if we whad been punished for insiting on casuing the waiters extra work by insiting on eating in the non smoking section. I also noticed the remaining half glass of brandy from our chicken dish sitting on the counter next to the till, which seemed symbolic of the stinginess of the place. Terrible value. I just thought that you should be warned. I will never, ever go there again.
thanks Louise!
Update Oct. 2002:
Boston Viking: Follow up... I have been back to the Punjab several times since my first review. I have been treated as curtly as the previous reviewer, but I have been firm in asserting my right to dine there if they offer it, especially to the manager. The manager will accomodate if asked. Rude service is often remedied by the tip (service charge) or lack there of. One other complication... the back room though dedicated for evening non-smoking can sometimes be rented out to parties, thus putting non-smokers out on those occassions. Caution is recommended as well as persistence. In London, Indian venues with non-smoking sections are rare. As for quality, the Punjab offers traditional British versions of Indian foods. For best quality and dining, the Bombay Brasserie is highly recommended, but expect smoking issues there again, and of course twice (if not three times) the cost of the Punjab. Cheaper Indian venues can only be found at take-aways. For the safest value, quality, and environment, I must always defer to Masala Zone, which is completely non-smoking, but expect to pay appropriately. Masala Zone is by far the best option in London. Best regards, (BostonViking)

Rasa

Rasa Samudra
5 Charlotte St, London W1T 1RE (near Tottenham Court Rd)     tel 020 7637 0222

Rainforest Cafe
Shaftesbury Avenue (Piccadilly tube)    tel 44 0171 434 3111
It's 'up' from the tube, on the right-hand side. Dedicated to educating as well as feeding the visitor. The goal is to teach people about the rainforest habitat. And sell lots of animal dolls.
Nov. 2005: The store is on the main floor, the restaurant below, with lots of tropical decor. It turned quite cold in late November, so I would have ducked into a cigarette factory. Fortunately it was in fact smokefree. I had an enchilada, the food's good if rich, the coffee weak, the service fast and friendly, the animal soundtrack loud and relentless. The staff must be going slowly mad. 'Tropical' drinks menu.

Red Lion Parliament Street SW1 @ Derby Gate
Pub. Has a 'smokefree upstairs' sign.

Red Veg
95 Dean Street (W1, Soho, off Oxford St)     tel 020 7437 3109
Very good 'fast food' veggie burgers, french fries and creative snacks like deep-fried baby corn (aka spicy baby corn firesticks). Completely non-smoking but small seating area for only about 15 people.

Rocket
4-5 Lancashire Court, Brook Place, tel 011-020-7629-2889
Terrific Mediterranean food on the second floor of this restaurant on a tiny street in Mayfair, quite near Oxford Street. There is a bar with smoking on the first floor. Second floor - where the main restaurant is - is entirely non-smoking. It is busy all the time, so reservations are recommended even at lunch!

Roots n Culture - Reggae Sessions
Niceness Bar
22 Cazenove Road, London, N16     tel 0709 228 2950
Regular monthly non-smoker friendly reggae sessions. No smoking on the dancefloor (basement), whereas smokers are welcome to smoke in the main bar area on the ground floor. If this is successful and well supported, we may run completely smoke free sessions in the future (which is my ultimate dream).

Rules Restaurant
35 Maiden Lane, Covent Garden WC1 (Covent Garden or Charing Cross tube)
Old ("the oldest in London", started 1798) and swanky restaurant. Traditional British food with game cookery, oysters, pies and puddings. Convenient to theatres. "Very good restaurant, pricey etc. I went there last week and it was good. They have private rooms for hire which allow smoking."
thanks Kate from Smokefree London!

Sable D'or Patisserie
Cafe 249 Muswell Hill, Broadway, N10, tel 020 8442 1330
43 The Broadway, Crouch End, N8, tel 020 8341 7789
The pastries, mousse cakes, quiche tarts, fresh artisan breads, baked daily throughout the day and crepes are unbelievably delicious and the atmosphere is wonderful. It is also child friendly with high chairs provided for young children and young families can always be seen there. Moms gather during the week, re-arrange the tables to accomodate their group and chat and network. Upstairs at Sable D'or, recently re-furbished with a Country French atmosphere, communal table and other seating, fireplaces, the space lends itself to gatherings, quiet group meetings such as knitting groups, book readings and small celebrations. This is a Smoke Free Building. Newspapers are provided 7 days a week. Very pleasant service. I travel to Sable D'or every morning from Highgate and it feels as though I am back in Manhattan. Just a Great Friendly Atmosphere!
Thanks Joan Podel!

Sakonis

Thanks Randy!

Sheng's Chinese Restaurant
68 Millman Street, Bloomsbury (WC1N)     tel 020 7405 3697
Quaint little Chinese restaurant near Gray's Inn Road (closest tube - Russell Square). Service is friendly and personal - you may end up chatting with the owners. Apart from the usual array of Chinese fare, they do a very good Laksa. Non-smoking throughout. Prices are very reasonble and it is a good lunchtime venue.
Thanks Geoff Drake!

Starbucks
Coming to a location near you... no matter where you are. The world's biggest coffee shop chain, with locations all over London. They also serve food, sometimes beyond the usual pastry fare. Also they take credit cards, with no minimum as far as I can tell, so it's nice if you're running low on cash, but an expensive way to conserve cash!

Cafe cum music/CD shop (lots of reggae) which is probably why there were no cigs.

TGI Friday's
6 Bedford Street, Covent Garden (WC2)
tel: 020 7379 0585
TGI Friday's chain of restaurants are non-smoking throughout the restaurant areas but smoking is allowed at the bar area. This generally doesn't present a problem and staff are usually quite accommodating of requests for specific tables. The food is your standard 'American diner' chain style but is well prepared with good size portions. I wouldn't say it is cheap but because the portions are large if you order sensibly the damage won't be too bad. They are very kid friendly, with highchairs available and sometimes will have balloons etc. for the little 'uns. My favourite here is the ribs - love 'em. The Covent Garden venue can be quite busy but there are other locations around London and the UK.
Thanks Geoff!
