Nicest tea shop/ café I have ever been to! I wished every city had such a lovely place. On the ground floor they sell tea, upstairs you find a café. You can choose amoung many different sorts of tea (no tea bag tea, of course). The smell of tea is everywhere in the shop and because smoking is not allowed the aroma is impressing. If you travel through Aachen, this place should be a must. They are closed to the city hall. Closed on Sundays. Tea, coffee, some cakes. Price range: middle.

Vegetarian restaurant, with specialities from Southeast Asia, not far from the Brandenburg Gate and down the street from the British Embassy. Near tram station Under der Linden (S1 and S2) and the U-Station Mohrenstrasse (U2) and accessible via buses 100, 157, 200, 257. This is a lovely place with a smoke-free section and features currys, sates, pad thai, and lots of delicious and as-spicy-as-you-want-it veggie food with an Asian accent. Nice staff, too, calm environment, great location.
   Hours T-F 12 noon to 3 pm and 6 pm to 11 pm, Saturday 6 pm to 11 pm. Sundays and holidays noon to 11 pm. One of their brochures lists opening hours on Monday (same as other weekdays), while another says Mondays they are closed, so if you're there on a Monday, it might be worth calling to check.

I recommend the wonderful smoke-free vegetarian cafeteria-style restaurant called Buxs, located at Frauenstrasse 9, just near the Viktualienmarkt in Munich. Here you can load up your plate with an enormous variety of fresh salads, cold vegetable dishes, as well as a daily soup and a few hot dishes, both mains and sides. Everything is vegetarian, and many dishes are vegan. The restaurant is spotless and the aromas that greet you when you walk in smell delicious.

The smoky cafes and restaurants is the only blot on an otherwise lovely trip, so I'd like to specifically mention the Seattle Coffee Club outlets. The two I visited, one on Theaterinstrasse near the City Hall in Marienplatz, and another in Gartnerplatz, were both delightfully busy with young people, served yummy coffee drinks and pastries, and the air was blessedly clean -- a real oasis among smoky and unpleasant dining experiences.

"We are sad to say this place is NOT 100% smokefree, as they claim on their website. It is true, there is no smoking allowed inside. However, this is a very small place with no windows; a double-glass door is the only option for fresh air. When we found their listing on the web, we immediately went there to check them out. Only to be greeted by two smoking people sitting right inside the entry. Needless to say, the smoke drifts inside. We didn't stay to find out just how much. This seems to be only an option for people looking for LESS smoke with their coffee or food. When I wrote the owner to ask them to change their misleading claim of being 100% smokefree, he seemed to be interested at first to find out what had happened. (They are not present themselves all day long.) But, just a few sentences down the e-mail he wrote "where else did anybody smoke, aside from the smoker's bench outside?". I have to emphasize again: there is no way the smoke would not get !

We found this after checking out about 7 other (smoke-filled or smoke-stinky) places in this small town (a 'Heilbad', which prides itself on the good air...). The food (mostly Greek dishes) was very good, too and the prices reasonable (they have good lunch deals!).

There are 4 dedicated smokefree rooms in a separate wing of the house (10 rooms total) and a dedicated smokefree breakfast room. Apparently all the public areas were also smokefree -- the owners themselves don't seem to smoke and there was a "thank you for not smoking" sign in the entrance. Otherwise - very lovely house, good breakfast, spacious and *spotless* rooms, and nice owners.

This cafe/restaurant is inside the Aquarium (separate entrance), directly at the Helgoland quay. The whole upper floor (the largest part of the venue) is smokefree and has a fabulous sea view. Were there on a slow day so can't say anything about how smoky it tends to get around the food counter, where smoking is permitted.

This is the second Pension where we stayed this summer in the south of Schwarzwald. Again it is a really, really quiet place to stay, in a small village. In the evening you can let the window of your room open, and you won't be able to hear any noise...GREAT ! The food was - just as in Haus Sonne - excellent & organic-vegetarian. In Haus Amala you can choose between several organic drinks (also alcool - in Haus Sonne : no alcoholic drinks). Lots of walking and biking-trails in these both hotels.
