Canada leads in protecting nonsmokers.
Provinces and territories which ban smoking in the workplace, including restaurants and bars: BC, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, Ontario, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan. Quebec adopted a similar law which goes into effect May 31, 2006. Ontario casinos go to smokefree by end of June, including First Nations casinos.
Submissions are still welcome; change does not happen overnight. Venues which lead by example deserve our business.

Oct. 2004: Manitoba and New Brunswick have banned smoking in all public places, including pubs and restaurants. (Does not apply on First Nations land.)
A similar ban is to begin in Saskatchewan in January 2005.
Spring 2002: Newfoundland bans smoking in restaurants. Jan. 2002: British Columbia bans smoking in restaurants; the city of Victoria BC led with a ban in restaurants since at least 2000.
August 2001: Ottawa, Ontario banned smoking in workplaces and public places (including bars, bowling alleys & other fun places).
June 2001: Toronto banned smoking in restaurants and bowling alleys. Bars, bingo & billiard halls, casinos and racetracks get three years to phase in a ban.

MANITOBA

BRANDON

The City of Brandon passed smoking By-Law No. 6696 which bans smoking in all public places and workplaces, including bars, restaurants, bingo halls, and even jails. The new City Council is currently reviewing the By-Law and the citizens are in a fight to keep it as it is. Bars and restaurants have line-ups just as they did in the days when smoking was allowed. It is a great pleasure to visit the City of Brandon, Manitoba! Learn more at the City's web site.

WINNIPEG

The City of Winnipeg passed smoking By-Law No. 88/2003 that bans smoking in all public places and workplaces effective July 1, 2003. This is a tightening of a previous by-law that prohibited smoking in public places but allowed it in bars, lounges, etc. A PDF file of the bylaw is available through the Manitoba Hotel Association.

Restaurants must be at least 60% non-smoking. Bars have no restrictions. As of Dec. 1, 2001, three state-owned casinos have separate smoking sections, including not more than 40% of the gaming spaces. The separations are good. Starting July 2003, they will become smokefree: gaming spaces, restaurants and bars. There will be smoking rooms in the gaming areas.

Capital Regional District
of British Columbia has a long list of smokefree eating establishments, last updated in 1997. It covers Victoria, Oak Bay and Esquimalt, Saanich, the Peninsula & Islands, Care Facilities, Hospitals and Educational Facilities, and Western Communities. They passed a strict bylaw banning public smoking, which was to take effect in Jan. 1999. There have been challenges to it, so we can't comment yet.
