Update January 2007: Belgium banned smoking in all restaurants. Smoking was already banned in all workplaces and public buildings. Smoking is still allowed in bars.

Update Nov. 2003: news from Kate Hunter about a "wonderful small chain of smoke-free bakery cafes in Belgium, called Le Pain Quotidien in French or Het Dagelijks Brood in Flemish ("the daily bread"). ... none of the bakeries I visited *felt* like chains. Seating is often communal at a single large central table. They serve excellent salads, sandwiches and soups from a seasonal, modestly priced menu and offer wonderful pastries, bread and coffee too. They also serve very simple breakfasts. I highly recommend this business."

The restaurant is part of a chain. There are several other restaurants in Flanders (all in or around Brussels) and 2 in Turin, Italy.
They offer a wide range of delicious, healthy snacks, many vegetarian. There are no-smoking signs on the tables, although they are a bit soft ("your neighbour would prefer it if you didn't smoke", or words to that effect).

Oliveria is an Italian restaurant which during the day is a seller of olive & Italian products (olives, olive oils, etc.). They also have a guesthouse upstairs (Jeff's Guesthouse) which is a lovely place to stay in the heart of the city between the Grote Markt and the Oude Markt. The store/restaurant/guesthouse is run by a Belgian couple whom are fanatical about Italy and are excellent cooks. They have more seats in the summer when they can expand into the olive store but reservations are always recommended.

Op zondag is er een menu met voorgerecht ,hoofdschotel en dessert voor 21 . De gehele zaak is ROOKVRIJ ,zonder uitzonderingen.

The tearoom serves shrimp and cheese croquettes, vegetables, fish soup and other cheese dishes. The restaurant is open 11:30-14:30 and serves fish and vegetarian dishes. Sundays there is a prix fixe menu. The whole place is nonsmoking, without exceptions.
