AUSTRALIA

BHUTAN

Smoking is banned in workplaces, including restaurants. We will be happy to list venues which comply with this ban.

HONG KONG

Jan. 1, 2007: smoking ban takes effect in public spaces (inside and out), including workplaces, schools, restaurants and karaoke lounges.

INDIA

JAPAN

KOREA

A Korean colleague says that, as in Japan, there are newish, but unevenly enforced laws meant to protect nonsmokers in public places. Most restaurants have non-smoking "areas" (i.e., no real separation). Men tend to smoke more than women; old people tend to smoke more than young; but interestingly, it is considered rude to light up in the presence of an older person.

NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand has banned smoking in the workplace, which includes restaurants. We are happy to go on listing venues which comply with the ban.

P. R. CHINA

A Chinese colleague says there is a new law prohibiting smoking in most public places (airports, theaters, stores, hotels). In fact, enforcement is uneven - a non-smoking sign in a smaller city may not mean anything. In Shanghai and Beijing, they are more apt to mean business. All this pales, of course, in comparison to the overall air pollution. Meanwhile, most three-star+ hotels are considered good bets for nonsmokers, but only in the guest rooms.

BEIJING

Kunlun Hotel
A ritzy tourist hotel. The 21st and 22nd floors have been designated as non-smoking. According to legend, says their web site, a 5-star hotel appears in Beijing... :)

DAVAO CITY (MINDANAO)
Davao has banned smoking (No.043-02) in a large number of public places, including public buildings, entertainment venues, hospitals, shopping malls, concerts and other places. We do not know how compliance is going, so are happy to add venues to this page.

Ethnos Bar and Restaurant
Davao Medical School Road, near Davao Circumferencial Road
Non-alcoholic bar and restaurant, nonsmoking.
Open 4pm to midnight, all-around entertainment for young crowd.
Coffee shop, restaurant, live bands Friday and Saturday. Billiards, internet access and network gaming, video games, board games, reading room with library. Event room available to rent. Catering.

SINGAPORE

Smoking is forbidden in most public places (but then so are lots of other things), and there is a hefty fine. You can reportedly smoke at food stalls on the street - but don't drop the butt on the street! - and in cabs. There is a heavy duty on cigarettes. Restaurants and stores with air conditioning do not allow smoking. Bars and discos do allow smoking. Singapore Moslems generally do not encourage smoking at home, Indian women mostly don't smoke, nor do Sikhs, for religious reasons.
