HOLBROOK
Mesa Italiana Restaurant
2318 Navajo Boulevard (520) 524-6696
It is a very good Italian restaurant. It is easy to be the best
restaurant for miles when you are the only restaurant for miles. This
would be very good on its own. We ate there twice two days in a row. The
food was very good. They had a good mix of traditional southern Italian
food and northern Italian food. They have a sports bar next door that
allows smoking.
thanks again Fred!

I love to go out, but hate to come home smelling like smoke and coughing. The Paper Heart is a nice alternative. They have a variety of types of music, comedy every third Thursday, belly dancing lessons, an art gallery, and a bar, and whatever else interesting seems to come their way.
Sweet Tomatoes
6202 East Broadway Boulevard (520) 747-4137
4420 North Stone Avenue (520) 293-3343
Monster salad bar (mooo, keep moving please!). Salad, pasta, soup and dessert buffets. Everything fresh. All you can eat for $7 (March 2001) is quite modest in my opinion. It's healthy stuff (as long as you don't stuff yourself silly). There's a neat fro-yo machine where you can dispense your own twisty cones of slush. Very clean and cheerful, and crowded with families. Not a place for an intimate tete a tete (hundreds of people), more a place to bring your relatives for a quick easy lunch. A lot like the Fresh Choice places in California.
Tarbell's
3213 East Camelback Road (602) 955-8100
An upscale, smokefree bar which
serves full meals right at the bar.

Sea Saw Restaurant
7133 East Stetson Drive 480-481-WINE
Using the most pristine ingredients possible, Tokyo-born chef Nobu Fukuda, one of Food & Wine's 2003 Best New Chefs in the USA, is creating "edible magic" in his 26-seat space in downtown Scottsdale's hip arts & theatre district. Order individual small plates or indulge in the 8 course omakase (chef's choice) tasting menu for a dining experience whose memory will linger long past the foie gras and ice wine. Full bar and premium sake list, as well as the 2000+ bottle Wine Spectator award-winning list, shared with sister venues Cowboy Ciao and Kazimierz. 7 nights, from 5:30 PM.

TEMPE
The voters of Tempe passed a total, indoor, public place smoking ban on May 21, 2002. The ban includes all indoor public workplaces, which would include bars, restaurants, bowling alleys, etc. Public smoking is only allowed outdoors, or on patios as long as it is away from the entrance and/or exit of the establishment. Comments welcome on how this is going!
Trip report by Fred: We just got back from a trip to Arizona. The smoking ban in Tempe is
working. We had a very good dinner there that was smoke-free. We spoke
to the manager that said every restaurant in Tempe was smoke-free. He
said it in a very matter of fact fashion.
TUCSON
Nov. 2004 - A visitor: I have been in Tucson several times a year for the last three years, no smoking in any of the restaurants I've been in.
In October 1999, smoking was banned from restaurants which do not provide a separately ventilated
space, or make most of their money from food (even if there's an in-house bar). If a place sells food but makes most of the $$ on alcohol, you can smoke there, and straight-up bars are exempt.
It applies within Tucson city limits, not all of Pima County. Things are still in flux - there's a 'hardship' phase-in period, and restaurants can supposedly get around it by declaring themselves private clubs (the city sued one place that tried it, though). So we are still interested in hearing about smokefree venues.
Thanks to Beth O'Connor for part of this update.<

El Mezon del Cobre
2960 North First Avenue (520) 791-0977
Fine Mexican restaurant. The outside isn't fancy, but it's definitely a good time. The night we went, they had a substantial mariachi band: 3 violins, a trumpet, guitarron (the big fat six-string fretless bass guitar), guitar, and singing by many. There were occasional disagreements about the key but overall they were good, professional and entertaining. Some of their numbers didn't seem traditional, more like re-arranged movie soundtracks or pop tunes from the 60s, oddly attractive. The band's arranger is imaginative. It's neat to come across fine musicianship in unexpected places. Oh yeah and the food was good too, well prepared and served. All your favorites like chimichangas, chile rellenos, chicken dishes, sopas and a big seafood menu. I had grilled fish; too salty, but pour enough lime on anything and it tastes good, especially with a Tecate. The salad, as is often the case in Mexican restaurants, was an afterthought. That's not really what you go to a Mexican restaurant for. Lots of mixed drinks. The small bar was in a separate room with no door, which I guess is why there was no smoking. A nice place to wait for a table (it can take a long time, but it goes quickly because of the music). Lots of families were there, and a few birthdays were sung. Prices are not cheap, but not more than moderate. They don't take reservations because they don't have to. The parking lot was full.

Montgomery's Grill & Saloon
13190 E. Colossal Cave Rd #190, Vail (520)762-0081
(about a mile east of I-10 by the railroad tracks)
I found a great smoke free place, now a regular customer there. Clean comfortable family friendly neighborhood grill/bar with occaisional live music on random nights. Eat in or take out. 100% Smoke free bar/restaurant inside, smoking permitted in outdoor patio area. Opened late 2005 in new building.
Food much better than average bar/grill fare, diverse salads, burgers, hot and cold sandwiches and appetizers, each night of the week has its own regular special, pork chops, out of this world pork ribs, steak and a few others. Call ahead to be sure which night is which. Except for the nightly special, regular menu items nothing over $9 (as of 7/06 menu), no skimpy portions either.
There is virtually nowhere to go eat in this far south end of Tucson, but the food is the reason to eat here. Tucson restaurants are generally smoke free but difficult to find smoke free music/entertainment. (you might want to list it under Tucson, it's barely outside city limits.)
Open 11 AM, kitchen usually open til 9PM, sometimes later if busy enough.
Thanks to Andrei!
